  • Designed by research telephone engineer Tommy Flowers to solve a math problem
  • the world’s first programmable, electronic, digital computer
  • quintupled the processing speed by using shift registers
  • Prototype MK I was working in 1943, MK II in 1944. Used shift registers to quintuple processing speed.
